19th Century Moroccan Inlaid Wood Armchair with Geometric Bone Decoration
$4,500
A striking Moroccan wood armchair dating to the 19th century, richly decorated with geometric inlay, carved ornament and intricate turned spindle work. The tall architectural back is crowned with a pierced and carved scrolling crest centered by a six-pointed star or Seal of Solomon motif, while dark and light inlays create a dramatic graphic contrast throughout the chair.
The rectangular back is framed by repeating geometric borders and incorporates rows of finely turned spindle work, pointed arched openings and a large central carved panel arranged in a complex geometric composition. Similar inlaid decoration continues along the broad armrests, front legs and pierced corner brackets. The sides beneath the arms feature particularly elaborate grids of miniature turned elements, echoed by the spindle galleries across the back and front seat rail.
The chair is raised on straight legs, with the front pair accented by striped inlay and dark turned feet. A neutral upholstered seat provides a restrained counterpoint to the exceptionally detailed woodwork.
An impressive example of 19th century Moroccan decorative furniture, this armchair combines architectural forms, intricate craftsmanship and bold geometric ornament in a highly sculptural design.
