An English Rococo Revival mahogany tilt-top table dating to circa 1860, featuring a distinctive shaped top raised on an exceptionally sculptural carved tripod base. The top presents a dramatic concave-sided outline with projecting corners, a molded edge and the warm brown tones and fine grain characteristic of mahogany.
The top is fitted with a tilting mechanism allowing it to be raised vertically when not in use, revealing the elegant profile of the table and making it particularly decorative even when closed. It is supported by a richly carved central pedestal incorporating pierced openwork, elongated foliate motifs and scrolling details.
The pedestal flows into three dramatically sweeping legs, each carved with pronounced C-scrolls, foliage and molded ornament before terminating in boldly scrolled foliate feet. The fluid curves and exuberant naturalistic carving are characteristic of the Rococo Revival taste that flourished during the mid-19th century.
With its compact proportions, unusual shaped top and elaborate carving, this antique English table would make a striking occasional or side table in a traditional or eclectic interior.
