Pair of British Steeplechase Horse Racing Paintings on Board, Framed
$8,400
A dynamic pair of steeplechase paintings capturing the intensity, risk, and rhythm of cross-country equestrian sport. Likely originating from the British school in the late 19th or early 20th century, these oil-on-board works depict two vivid race moments: one a dramatic fall at a water jump, the other a clean forward surge of riders in full gallop. The subject matter, format, and treatment of both horse and landscape align closely with British sporting art traditions, long celebrated for their narrative realism and atmospheric countryside scenes.
The palette is subdued and naturalistic, with earthy greens and umber tones framing the vibrant jockey silks. Loose yet intentional brushwork delivers energy and movement without sacrificing detail. The paintings are housed in later ebonized and gilt frames, likely American and added in the mid-to-late 20th century for resale or stabilization.
Rich in character, this pair offers collectors or decorators a sense of period drama and sporting elegance—ideal for a library, study, or equestrian-themed interior where dynamic storytelling and historical flair are welcome.
