English 19th Century Carved Wood Mirror in the Manner of Grinling Gibbons
$8,995
This English carved wood mirror from the 19th century is executed in the manner of Grinling Gibbons, with an abundant frame of flowers, fruit, leaves, and scrolling foliage surrounding an octagonal mirror plate. A carved ribbon-tied crest with rolled parchment and book form at the top lends the piece a particularly decorative and literary character, while the dense naturalistic ornament gives it the lively movement associated with Gibbons-inspired work.
The frame is deeply carved and visually rich, with clusters of blossoms, berries, and curling leaves arranged in high relief around the glass. It has the kind of layered silhouette that reads beautifully on a wall, casting small shadows that emphasize the carving and bring depth to the composition. While clearly inspired by earlier English Baroque carving, this example reads as a 19th-century decorative interpretation rather than a period 17th-century work.
The pale surface appears to have been stripped or lightened at some point, giving the mirror a softened, weathered look that makes it easy to place in both traditional and more relaxed interiors. Above a chest, console, or mantel, it offers strong decorative presence without needing further ornament around it.
