18th Century English George II Japanned and Gilt Console Table with Marble Top
$12,600
A striking 18th-century English George II console table combining black japanned decoration, gilded carving and a richly figured gray marble top. The narrow rectangular form is animated by an unusually theatrical front, centered by a carved and gilded lion mask surrounded by scrolling foliate ornament.
The black ground of the apron is decorated with delicate gilt Chinoiserie landscapes depicting pagodas, trees, birds and distant architectural scenes. Gilded acanthus leaves and floral details continue onto the front corners and dramatic cabriole legs, which are carved with large shell motifs and terminate in expressive ball and claw feet. The simpler straight rear legs allow the table to sit neatly against a wall, a practical construction typical of console tables intended to be viewed primarily from the front and sides.
The combination of Chinoiserie decoration and bold classical and animal motifs gives the table remarkable visual presence. Its shallow depth makes it particularly well suited to an entrance hall, drawing room or dining room, where the dark japanned surface, aged gilding and cool gray marble create a rich and layered decorative effect.
