Pair of Baroque Style Giltwood Dolphin Carvings on Lucite Bases, 19th century

This striking pair of carved giltwood dolphin figures mounted on clear lucite bases likely began their life as decorative architectural elements—perhaps once adorning a piece of furniture, a boiserie, or a grand interior fixture. French or Italian in origin and dating to the 19th century, each dolphin is rendered in an exaggerated Baroque manner, with a fiercely expressive face, coiled tail, and highly stylized scales. The sculptural drama is accentuated by the shimmering water-gilt finish, which has developed a mellow patina with traces of age and wear that only enhance the sense of character and provenance.

Mounted vertically on crisp, minimal lucite blocks, the figures gain a contemporary lift—literally and visually. They now serve as bold sculptural accents, easily placed on a console, mantel, or bookshelf. The combination of antique carving and modern presentation offers a dynamic contrast of texture and tone, appealing to both traditional and eclectic interiors. Sold as a pair.
